Phase 3 Updates for Birch Bay Village

At Monday's Board of Directors Special Meeting, the Board made the following official decisions regarding how the Village will respond should Whatcom County move into Phase 3 in the next few weeks.

On the downside, the Pool will remain closed for the balance of the summer
The board recognized how important this amenity is to the community and most of our debate last night was around the pros and cons of reopening it. The following were key reasons for this decision:
      * Firstly, Whatcom County is still not ready to move into Phase 3 & it is unknown when this will happen if at all, so at best we would be on standby and our season would be short even if the county does get the green light.
      * Specifically, with respect to pools, the Health Department recommends that people over 65 not use pools until Phase 4. It is very unlikely that would happen this summer in any case. To view their Guidelines, click here
      * Phase 3 requirements involve us to enforce 6 feet social distancing, provide extra sanitation and carefully monitor people counts. With our already limited resources we felt that enforcing those requirements would be nearly impossible for us and our staff.
      * Similarly, with the extra staff requirement, our season would be even more limited than usual when school/college students return to school (mid-late August is when most of our staff has traditionally started leaving)

Ultimately, the Board felt that making this decision to keep it closed now as opposed to continuing to spend resources (money!) on possibly reopening was the most responsible decision to make in light of the efforts we will make to loosen the restrictions elsewhere.

      Restrooms Reopening
As of Friday, July 3rd, we will be reopening Sand Dollar, Kwann, and Sunset Park Restrooms. These restrooms will be USE AT YOUR OWN RISK and are planned to be sanitized daily. The Office restroom will remained closed until Phase 3.

      Office Opening
Once Phase 3 is approved, the Office will be open for 1 person at a time drop-in Monday through Thursday provided you are wearing a mask. Fridays will still be reserved for cleaning.

      Pickleball/Tennis Extended Hours
Pickleball & tennis courts will be open until dusk starting Friday, July 3rd. All players, however, must have a signed waiver and ID card on hand (this will be enforced by Security).

      Golf & Grille
The Golf & Grille will be extending hours to normal (8am – 6pm daily) for July & August to improve level of service to golf and be available for food service as originally planned for this year. Please continue to make tee times online & place orders online, but if you need assistance in doing so, we will have staff available (call 360-371-2026).
